CUSTODIAN LEAD WORKER
COUNTY OF SANTA CRUZ
Under general supervision, provide care and cleaning for assigned areas in and around County buildings, offices, institutions and other facilities; supervise a small group of custodians; and perform other duties as required.
This class is the lead worker level in the custodian series. Incumbents are assigned to work in various County buildings and facilities and are responsible for keeping assigned areas clean and orderly. As a secondary assignment, positions in this class guide, check, assign, and correct the work of a group of custodians and act for the custodial supervisor in the supervisor's absence. This class is distinguished from the next higher class of Supervising Custodian in that the latter class has, as its primary assignment, the day-to-day supervision of custodial positions.
Orient and train subordinate custodians; conduct performance evaluations or provide input for performance evaluations; check the work of assigned crew and refer problems to the supervisor, as appropriate; maintain and replenish supplies; notify the supervisor when crew members are absent; prepare simple reports including time cards; may assist in the preparation of instruction and procedure manuals; review instructions and procedures with subordinates; sweep, mop, scrub, strip, wax, and buff floors; sweep, vacuum, shampoo, and steam clean carpets; operate heavy floor care equipment; dust and polish furniture woodwork, metalwork, fixtures and equipment; sweep walks, stairways and entryways; empty waste receptacles and ash trays and dispose of trash; wash walls, fixtures, equipment and windows; clean, disinfect and polish water fountains, sinks and other fixtures and equipment; maintain rest-rooms in sanitary condition and replenish supplies; replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes; make elementary repairs to fixtures and equipment, such as replacing faucet washers and installing shelves; report the need for maintenance work to superiors; move and arrange office equipment and furniture; set up furniture for meetings; report conditions which may indicate vandalism, illegal entry or fire hazards; clean Venetian blinds and screens; remove dirty linens; maintain supplies of clean linen; maintain designated areas in aseptic condition; may raise and lower the flag; may deliver outdated drugs and outdated confidential records to the County warehouse for secure disposal; may provide security for assigned areas, such as open and lock doors and windows and turn on/off lights; assist in training custodial staff in aseptic procedures, infection control and procedures for handling toxic materials, as related to custodial work; act as custodial supervisor in the absence of the supervisor.

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying, unless otherwise specified. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Six months of experience performing duties comparable to those of a Custodian in the County of Santa Cruz.
License Requirements: Possession of a valid California class C driver license is required for some positions.
Background Investigation: Fingerprinting is required.
Special Working Conditions: Exposure to: variable temperatures; cramped work spaces; heights, such as on ladders; strong and unpleasant odors and fumes; noise; the possibility of exposure to infectious materials which might cause chronic disease or death; the possibility of exposure to toxic substances or chemical irritants; and, for some positions, disturbing situations, such as cleaning the morgue after an autopsy.
Other Special Requirements: Availability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and for emergencies, as needed.
