Under general direction, to organize and direct the work of a planning group; and to do other work as required.
This is the full supervisory level, with incumbents having responsibility over a unit of planners, resource planners and/or transportation planners. This class differs from the class of Principal Planner, which is the second full supervisory class over a section composed for several units. This class differs from the class of Planner IV in that the latter is the highest working level in the planning series, which may entail project leader responsibilities on multifaceted programs.
Supervises the work of subordinate staff engaged in planning activities including the development of general plan elements, the development and implementation of growth management plans, processing land use applications, such as changes in zoning, variances and use permits, and plan check and permit processing; reviews staff reports being submitted to land use review bodies; coordinates planning activities with other sections and divisions; resolves difficult planning problems and performs the more difficult staff planning work; may act for the Principal Planner as assigned; interprets policy to staff, the public and others; analyzes work methods and recommends changes, then implements as approved; establishes and maintains record keeping systems; prepares correspondence and reports; prepares and presents study results at various meetings.
Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledge and abilities would be:
One year of experience equivalent to a Planner III with the County of Santa Cruz.
