COUNTY OF SANTA CRUZ
Under general direction, incumbents plan, develop, organize, analyze, direct and evaluate a variety of aquatics programs in the Parks, Open Space and Cultural Services Department (POSCS); assess community needs for aquatics programs, facility requirements, and special events; develop program budgets; obtain grants, administer contracts, and develop revenue sources to fund the various programs; and do other work as required.
Positions in this class manage a variety of aquatics programs through the subordinate level classification, Aquatics Coordinator. Aquatics Coordinators implement and coordinate the daily activities of the programs developed by the Aquatics Supervisor. The Aquatics Coordinator may assist in the development and supervision of the programs. Aquatics Supervisor differs from the higher position of Parks Manager-Recreation & Cultural Services in that the latter has overall responsibility for the development, implementation, and coordination a variety of recreation, art and cultural, or operational and administrative programs in the Facilities Management or Public Services divisions of POSCS.
Independently develops, organizes, schedules, directs, and assesses the aquatics and special events programs to which the incumbent is assigned; assesses community needs; develops funding sources to implement the programs, including grant development, fund raising, fee schedules, and community outreach; develops and monitors the budgets; develops, evaluates, and administers contracts; plans staffing levels for programs; selects, evaluates, and trains staff including volunteer and seasonal workers; develops operational standards, policies, and procedures pertaining to assigned aquatics programs; plans and prepares marketing and promotional materials; monitors and supervises the purchase of supplies and furnishings; provides staff support, liaison and advice to commissions, committees and community organizations; assesses safety and risk potential, and plans programs and events to reduce County liability; prepares reports and correspondence; attends meetings and conferences; and substitutes for subordinate staff as needed.

Education and Experience
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Completion of a four year college program with major coursework in recreation or a related field and one year of experience coordinating or supervising aquatics program activities or aquatics special events.
Completion of a two year college program with major coursework in recreation or a related field and two years of experience coordinating or supervising aquatics program activities or aquatics special events.
Four years of experience coordinating or supervising aquatics and/or recreation program activities or special events, at least two years of which must be in aquatics.
A Master’s degree in recreation or a related field may substitute for up to 6 months of the required two years of experience coordinating or supervising aquatics program activities or special events.
Possession of a valid American Red Cross (ARC) lifeguard
Possession of a valid ARC CPR for the Professional Rescuer (CPR Pro) certificate* or American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Health Care Profession (Provider C);
Possession of one of the following: First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22), ARC Emergency Responder, First Responder, or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
Post-employment certifications required within six months of hire:
ARC trainer certificates for Lifeguard training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Title 22, and a valid Oxygen Administration certificate, a valid ARC Water Safety Instructor Certificate or Santa Cruz County Instructor Training Program.
* Acceptable Lifeguard and CPR Certifications include:
