DEFINITION

 

Under direction, plans, promotes, implements, coordinates and supervises the daily activities of a variety of POSCS programs, including special events, recreation (such as after school), therapeutic, softball, senior activities, classes and facilities usage; supervises the work of recreation program staff; schedules a variety of Parks, Open Space and Cultural Services (POSCS) programs throughout the county; and performs other work as required.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

This class differs from the higher level of Recreation Supervisor in that the latter has overall program responsibility for its assignment and provides direction to the Recreation Coordinator. Recreation Coordinators plan, implement and coordinate the daily activities of their assigned programs. Recreation Coordinator differs from the class of Recreation Program Specialist in that the latter serves as a specialist or coordinator for a recreation program, while the Recreation Coordinator coordinates multiple programs at multiple facilities and supervises assigned staff, including Recreation Program Specialists.

 

TYPICAL TASKS

 

Plans, coordinates and implements the daily activities of POSCS programs including facility usage, recreation, and special events; recruits, selects, schedules, motivates, evaluates and trains program staff and volunteers; develops schedules of activities for assigned activities; recommends policies and procedures for assigned programs; evaluates existing and proposed programs, costs and facilities and makes recommendations for improvement, continued use and/or inclusion in recreation services; develops and monitors assigned program budgets; prepares brochures, flyers, advertising and other publicity materials to promote recreation programs, special events and facility use; coordinates and supervises special events, including scheduling facility use and transportation, processing payments for supplies and admission, and preparing and distributing publicity materials; answers questions and explains recreation programs and services to the public; responds to complaints regarding programs, fees and refund policies; gathers information and prepares reports as directed; attends meetings and conferences; assists in grant preparation; and substitutes for subordinate staff as needed.

        The practices and techniques of developing, organizing and supervising recreational activities.

        Safety and emergency procedures and first aid.

        The methods and techniques of publicity and promotion.

        The principles and practices of supervision and training.

        Communication skills and techniques.

        Specific program assignment (may be required).

 

Some knowledge of:

        Monitoring and preparing budgets.

 

Ability to:

 

        Plan, organize, implement, and evaluate a variety of recreation programs and special events.

        Plan, assign, direct, train, motivate and evaluate the work of subordinate staff.

        Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

        Recommend, interpret, explain and enforce program policies and procedures.

        Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

        Prepare reports and correspondence.

        Analyze and prepare grant proposals, contracts and budgets.

        Learn to input and access information on a computer.

        Travel to and perform duties at variety of outdoor and indoor recreation sites.

        Lift 25 pounds.

 

Training and Experience:

 

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

 

Completion of college with major coursework in recreation or related field and one year of experience coordinating or supervising recreation program activities or special events.

 

OR

 

Three years of experience coordinating or supervising recreation program activities or special events.

 

 

 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

 

License/Certificate:

Possession of a valid California class C driver license.

American Red Cross Community First Aid and Safety Instructor Certificate may be required within the first year of employment for some positions.

Recreation: Possession of a valid first aid certificate, as prescribed by law, and adult, child, infant, and two person Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificates within six months of employment.
