DEFINITION

Under direction, provides for the care, welfare, custody and rehabilitation of juvenile detainees in the juvenile hall on an assigned shift and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternative program; and does other work as required.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Group Supervisor I is the trainee class in the series. Incumbents initially work under close supervision, learn the procedures of caring for and counseling juvenile detainees in custody and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternative program subject to various shift assignments. Incumbents are expected to promote to the next level of Group Supervisor II after gaining experience and demonstrating the required level of proficiency.

Group Supervisor II is the full journey level expected to carry out a wide range of responsible work assignments on a shift with a minimum of direction. This class is distinguished from Senior Group Supervisor in that the latter is responsible for leadwork responsibilities, program planning and operation of a unit.

 

TYPICAL TASKS

Tasks are performed by both levels, I as trainee and II as journey: Plan, organize and supervise a program of work, study, athletics and recreation for a group of delinquent or emotionally disturbed detainees and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternative program, including activities such as housekeeping chores, clothing issue, personal hygiene, meals, arts and crafts and sports; maintain good discipline and instruct detainees and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternative program in acceptable behavior; take proper action for non-cooperating detainees and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternative program; maintain visual surveillance and employ prescribed security measures; conduct individual, group and family counseling and discussions; assist detainees and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternative program to gain insight into themselves and their relationships to family, peers and adults; observe and record information on detainees and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternative program behavior, attitude, appearance, interests and skills; maintain necessary logs and reports; may help in diagnosis and assist the probation officer with development of a treatment plan for detainees and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternate program; admit and release detainees upon proper authority; contact parents, probation officers, police and other individuals as required; supervise visiting; explain the purposes and procedures of the hall , facility or community based detention alternative program; may supervise volunteers and student interns; remain alert for potential problems and take measures to reduce tensions and avoid possible violence; attend and assist with unit meetings; participate and assist in group, individual, and community based detention alternative program in-service training programs; transportation of youth from home to the community detention alternative program and home again, provide relief for other classifications as required.

Training and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying, unless otherwise specified. A typical way to obtain these knowledge and abilities would be:

Group Supervisor I: Coursework in psychology, sociology, or other behavioral science, or experience involving the supervision, care or leadership of juveniles or adults.

Group Supervisor II: One year of experience performing duties comparable to a Group Supervisor I in Santa Cruz County.
