PROBATION DIVISION DIRECTOR
COUNTY OF SANTA CRUZ
Under general direction, plans, organizes and directs the operation of a geographic or functional division of the Probation Department; serves as a member of the management team to develop and implement policies, procedures programs and the departmental budget; acts for the Chief Probation Officer, as assigned; and does other work as required.
This class differs from the next higher class of Chief Probation Officer in that the latter is responsible for the administration of the Probation Department which includes juvenile detention, adult and juvenile supervision, court service, pre-trial services and diversion programs. This class differs from the next lower class of Deputy Probation Officer III in that the latter serves as a unit supervisor for a group of probation officers, and/or performs the most difficult, complex and specialized probation casework. This class differs from the next lower class of Assistant Superintendent Juvenile Hall in that the latter is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Juvenile Hall.
Plans, assigns, directs, coordinates and evaluates the work of a functional or geographic division of the Probation Department; develops, implements and evaluates program objectives and operational goals; serves as a management team member to develop and implement departmental policies, procedures and programs; prepares division requests for the annual budget and monitors major expenditures; keeps abreast of legislative changes, case laws, and new statutes, and formulates policies, procedures and systems required to implement mandated changes; coordinates division programs and operations with other divisions, County agencies and community groups; plans, directs, supervises, trains and evaluates the work of subordinate supervisory, professional and clerical support staff; assures that facilities occupied are secure, maintained and properly repaired; oversees the implementation of new programs; oversees the review and edit of complex court investigative reports; sets performance standards; provides consultation and guidance to staff to solve the most difficult casework problems; coordinates and conducts pre-employment background investigations mandated for all Group Supervisor and Deputy Probation Officer positions; resolves difficult personnel and discipline problems; may be required to deal with hostile or combative clients; serves as the departmental representative to the courts, State and community groups and associations; conducts, facilitates and attends meetings and conferences; evaluates division operations, and develops and recommends improvements and implements changes; prepares and/or reviews reports and correspondence; performs complex and difficult special assignments and projects; inputs, accesses and analyzes data using a computer.

License, Certificate Requirements: Possession of a valid California class C driver license, or the ability to provide suitable transportation, which is approved by the appointing authority; completion of mandated Standards and Training for Corrections.
Background Investigation: Ability to pass a full background investigation and meet the provisions of Government Codes 1029, 1029.1 and 1031
Special Working Conditions: May be exposed to infections which might cause chronic disease or death; physically and/or verbally abusive client behavior.
Other Special Requirements: Availability to respond to emergencies as needed on a 24-hour basis, which may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
Training and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledge and abilities would be:
Two years of experience equivalent to a Deputy Probation Officer III in the County of Santa Cruz which included one year of supervisory responsibility.
Two years of experience equivalent to an Assistant Probation Division Director in the County of Santa Cruz and one year of probation casework.
