DEFINITION

Under supervision, perform a variety of non-professional tasks in the field in support of agricultural, weights and measures, and/or vector control activities; and perform other work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this class assist agricultural/weights and measures inspectors and/or vector control specialists by performing a variety of routine and repetitive tasks which do not require the skill and knowledge of inspectors or specialists. 

TYPICAL TASKS

Drive to specific locations to place and service pest detection traps; draw accurate maps of property and trap locations; inspect plant foliage and nursery stock for specific pest or disease in accordance with specific guidelines; collect crop samples from fields or orchards, make blossom or other counts in accordance with specific instructions; package specimens and samples for shipment to labs; assist in the inspection of weighing and measuring devices, carry weights and take readings; assist inspecting and testing packaged goods for proper weight, measure or count and/or proper labeling; make test purchases of consumer goods; maintain accurate field notes and reports; make arithmetic calculations.  For vector control, use a microscope to identify and sort mosquitoes using a taxonomic key; assist with trail clearing; under supervision assist with mosquito control using mosquitocides.

Special Requirements, Conditions:

License Requirements: Possession of a valid California class C driver license.

Special Working Conditions: Exposure to: variable temperatures and weather conditions which include exposure to sun; allergens such as poison oak, pollen and bee stings; odors caused by alcohol or lures that may contain dilute pesticides; occasional contact with “Caution” level insecticides.
