Curriculum
The VAE curriculum is comprised of two - fours hours of classroom work, depending on the nature and severity of the student's crime. All students participate in exercises which are designed to strengthen their awareness of their role, and the effects of their crimes within their communities. Additional exercises are designed to increase awareness on the emotional, psychological, material, and financial effects their victims have suffered. Handouts, media presentations, and guest speakers are commonly used as training aids. Depending on the student's needs, they may participate in additional sessions on understanding the cycle of violence; focusing specifically on the impact of domestic violence and child abuse.A more intensive VAE model is offered to repeat offenders which is designed to help them understand the consequences if they continue to re-offend.
Juvenile offenders are referred to this program by Court Order. Attendance in the designated class(es) is mandatory and a certificate is awarded upon completion. The classes are instructed by highly trained service providers and/or juvenile probation officers.
