DEFINITION
Under general supervision, to perform a variety of semiskilled carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical work in the repair and maintenance of County buildings and equipment; and to do other work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Building Maintenance Worker I is the trainee and first working level in the series. Under close supervision, incumbents perform a variety of routine unskilled and semiskilled tasks and receive training in the full range of building maintenance assignments. Incumbents will normally advance to the Building Maintenance Worker II class after one year of service at this level.
Building Maintenance Worker II is the journey level class in the series. Incumbents perform a variety of semiskilled carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical tasks in the repair and maintenance of County buildings and equipment. This position may work irregular hours and be assigned on-call duty.
TYPICAL TASKS
Performs rough carpentry work in erecting partitions, repairing and hanging doors, building shelves, repairing walls and ceilings, building window frames and making minor repairs to wooden fixtures and furniture; does minor electrical work such as replacing switches, sockets, wall plugs, floor receptacles, light bulbs or fluorescent fixtures, fuses and breakers; does simple wiring; repairs or replaces leaky faucets, pipes, toilets, sinks and drains; performs routine maintenance on mechanical equipment such as greasing, oiling, and replacing worn or defective parts; repairs furniture; replaces broken windows; paints interiors and exteriors of buildings; assists skilled workers in more complex electrical, mechanical and plumbing work; may direct the work of temporary staff; may provide vacation or other temporary relief for other classes as required.

Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledge and abilities would be:
Building Maintenance Worker I: One year of experience in either general building maintenance work or in any of the building trades or as a Maintenance Custodian with the County of Santa Cruz.
Building Maintenance Worker II: One year of experience performing duties comparable to those of a Building Maintenance Worker I in Santa Cruz County.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possess and maintain a California Class C Driver's License is required for most positions in this class.
